![]() ![]() With the exception of the single bork, Stadia actually performed splendidly on my gameplay of GYLT. ![]() I will always go into detail on my experience with Stadia itself. Now while I did have a lot of fun with the game, there is the other side of things. I loved sneaking up behind them for a big bang… There are birds, mysterious red stones, clay men, … Really so much we can do in GYLT. The story slowly evolves by finding these strange books that unveil parts of what happened, the mystery that surrounds the town, … There is a lot going on at the same time and quite a bit of item management.įrom inhalers to replenish your health to batteries for your flashlight, needed for taking out monsters or basic defending against them. My favorite part is how the game created this dark atmosphere and yet, it was still nothing too frightening. It is truly majestic in more than one way and I have to say, for a game that is exclusive on Google Stadia, this is a really great piece of entertainment. There is so much to do in this game, from sneaking around to killing monsters to just solving basic puzzles. This is where the real game starts and the action meets adventure while also meeting puzzle games. It becomes clear that this is nothing like what can be labeled as normal and suddenly your character notices the missing cousin… Has she been hiding in school for the past month? Why? So many questions are at hand and you decide (obviously) to find her. Once you reach the end of the ride, the town has suddenly changed completely and there is not a single person in sight.īefore you know it, you try to find out what is going on in town and you are almost ambushed by monsters. But on your way down the cable car, you hit some sort of invisible wall. You head towards the cable car that can hopefully bring you back to town and out of the hands of the bullies. Trying to run away, you get stuck without your bike due to crashing during your escape. You are playing a little girl in search of her cousin Emily and while you are hanging up the posters, you are suddenly haunted by the local bullies. The game starts off rather unusual, with a warning about bullying and it becomes clear quite quickly why this was included. ![]() It’s a good message for kids and adults, but there are less scares for the latter.Welcome to our review of GYLT, a Google Stadia exclusive game about bullying!įace your fears in GYLT, a haunting tale about bullying and childhood nightmares, as you help Sally navigate a creepy world to rescue her missing cousin Emily. Those games are actually scary though, and it feels less like Gylt is trying to spook you than to scare you straight, implicating even nice kids in the harm done if they don’t stick up for their friends who are being bullied. Taking in each new environment is a lot of fun, as objects like arcade cabinets and school lockers are rendered in a stylish way that’s akin to popular titles like Little Nightmares and Inside. Their world is dangerous, but in a kid-friendly way - at least, older kid-friendly - that feels more Halloween night than all-out horror. Sally and Emily wouldn’t look out of place in a stop-motion animated film like James and the Giant Peach (though they most remind me of the kids from the Puffs Tissues commercials). It helps that the art style is just right for this kind of double-A game. I’ve always found it immensely satisfying to get introduced to a space and then explore until it makes sense, finding keys, unlocking doors, and grabbing useful items, and Gylt is that kind of game. ![]() Each area is spatially coherent, with a map that starts black and fills in each room with color as you explore it. I get it intellectually, but I much prefer Gylt’s approach. Its geography is ever changing, using the player’s inability to get a grip on where they even are as another vector for horror. That series, though occasionally good, represents a lot of my frustrations with modern horror games. After reviewing Layers of Fear last month, I found Gylt incredibly refreshing. And the exploration is a breath of fresh air. ![]()
